The 3rd International Symposium on Insects as Feed or Food, and Sustainable Food Security Solutions, Guangzhou 2026
(The Fourth Call)
(College of Food Science, College of Animal Science, College of Plant Protection, College of Natural Resources and Environment, South China Agricultural University,Guangzhou Dublin International College of Life Sciences and Technology)
President Xi Jinping pointed out: "We must obtain food from forests, from grasslands, from rivers, lakes and seas, and from protected agriculture. Meanwhile, we should secure calories and protein from plants, animals and microorganisms." The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations(FAO) predicts that the global population will reach 9 billion by 2050. It will be difficult for protein-rich foods such as meat, eggs and dairy products which are conventionally produced via livestock and aquaculture, to meet the demands of the global population. Insect protein as feed and food is an emerging protein resource which is rich in variety, high efficient and sustainable, meeting the requirements of the Food Diversification Strategy. Furthermore, it serves as a form of "new quality productive forces" that is eco-friendly and contributes to carbon sink formation.
After more than a decade of collaborative innovation and exploration by all stakeholders in industry, academia, research, and government, China's insect protein industry has largely completed the development, standardization, application, and promotion of the entire industrial chain, gaining widespread acceptance. By focusing on key aspects such as breeding, reproduction, large-scale farming, disease prevention and control, insect nutrition, feed application, and quality standardization, we have successfully established a "China-style development model" distinct from those in developed regions like Europe and America. We are confident that 2025 marked the inception year of China's insect protein industry—particularly the Black Soldier Fly sector—and that 2026 will usher in a period of rapid development. Insect protein is poised to make significant contributions to the feed alternative protein project outlined in China's "15th Five-Year Development Plan".
To further drive technological innovation and industrial upgrading of insect protein as feed and food, and building on the success of the previous two symposia, the 3rd International Symposium on Insects as Feed and Food, Sustainable Food Security Solutions will be grandly held in South China Agricultural University ,Guangzhou from April 10 to 13, 2026.
The Third Symposium will broaden its scope by convening heads of government functional departments alongside a distinguished assembly of domestic and international experts, scholars, and entrepreneurs. This pivotal gathering will unite stakeholders across the entire spectrum of the industry, encompassing feed and food insects, sustainable alternative proteins such as microbial and algal varieties, organic waste resource utilization, animal nutrition and feed science, animal farming, and protein food processing. Designed as a comprehensive platform for exchange, the event aims to facilitate the sharing of practical experiences, the latest research findings, and tangible progress in industrialization regarding research, application, and promotion. Through collective dialogue, participants will explore the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead, fostering robust synergy among industry, academia, research institutions, and government. Ultimately, the symposium is committed to support rural revitalization and driving the high-quality, green development of the alternative protein industry—with a special emphasis on insect protein—while providing sustainable solutions to address the critical global challenge of the shortages of the protein for feed and food.
